Suffolk Coast
Jim planned a ride to the Suffolk coast on the Saturday and with the promise
of fish ‘n’ chips at the seaside we blasted the first 45 miles in 3 hours. Buoyed on by our easy
morning ride and a belly full of deep fried food, we turned back for home and the realisation hit
that we’d been handed a huge false sense of security by the wind that was now hitting us head
on!
We broke the ride down into 10 mile chunks and ploughed on, adding cereal bars and energy drinks
to fuel our legs. The last 20 miles were painful, a combination of tired legs, aching knees, numb
hands, feet and not to mention numb nuts! Luckily we had a pub stop planned and they had a warm
fire to raise the spirits, however the weather wasn’t having any of it and soon it was sleeting
and raining heavily!!
The last four miles home were wet and cold and the difficulties of completing LEJOG became all to
clear to the three of us. 101 miles completed. The Sunday ride was an easier 41 miler with another
pub stop near the end and some great team slip-streaming on the 4 miles home. However, with Sid and
Pete picking up injuries from the weekend, the confidence for a pain free LEJOG is certainly in the
balance!
