10 days. 1000 miles. No surrender.

And so it came to pass that what started as a jokey, half-cut conversation quickly became a very harsh reality. Once you’ve suggested cycling 874 miles from Lands’ End to John O’Groats it seems rude not to make it up to the magic 1000 mile mark. And once you’ve decided on 1000 miles, that breaks down to 10 days at a nice 100 miles a day average.

On Wednesday 21st May five brave / stupid (delete as appropriate) men are setting out on their long-distance journey to spiritual enlightenment. Based on the theory that ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’ and united by their desire to challenge themselves they will cycle 1000 miles in 10 days to prove that they are real men (in the time honoured way of wearing a lot of lycra and using nappy-rash cream to prevent chronic chaffing.)

With individual days ranging from 85 to 130 miles it’s not going to be easy, but worthwhile things rarely are. And this isn’t just about the experience. Each rider has selected their own personal causes that they wish to support, with the aim being to raise a nice, round £10,000 between the 5 riders. If you’re reading this, the chances are that you either have personal knowledge of one of the brave souls who is about to embark upon this adventure, or that you have a keen interest in cycling. Either way, you understand that this a venture that is worth supporting. So, please, please (in the words of Bob Geldof) “give us your flipping money.”
